Turning instrumental music into a human story—through imagery, motion, and music-driven editing.
Kitt Wakeley | Cinematic Music Visual
Project synopsis
The Day of WHY is a cinematic visual experience accompanying an emotionally driven instrumental and choral composition by Kitt Wakeley. The project brief described music inspired by his interviews with 41 people who had experienced profound tragedy, including survivors, families facing terminal illness, and people navigating unexpected loss.
The visual work needed to respect that emotional foundation while leaving room for viewers to make their own connection. The piece developed into a progression through grief, questioning, resilience, and hope.
01 / The challenge
How do you build a visual story capable of carrying the emotional weight of a composition with no traditional lyrics or dialogue?
The music itself became the storytelling guide. Changes in intensity, tempo, instrumentation, and atmosphere provided the cues for pacing, transitions, imagery, and color. Every creative choice needed to feel connected to the composition.
The experience also needed to translate to a large-format LED display, keeping the visual language clear and cinematic at presentation scale.
02 / The creative approach
I approached the composition as a visual narrative. The piece begins with innocence and stillness, then introduces disruption, isolation, uncertainty, and the central question: Why?
Human imagery makes those abstract emotions tangible. Faces, environments, struggle, recovery, aspiration, and community create recognizable points of connection.
Symbolic imagery, atmospheric environments, texture, typography, light, and movement connect the transitions. The visual language gives the audience room to recognize something of their own experience.
The creative solution brings multiple disciplines together around one purpose: make the emotional movement of the music visible.
03 / The emotional arc
Stillness and possibility establish the world before disruption.
Fracture, uncertainty, and loss change the emotional landscape.
Isolation and questioning give the central emotion space to breathe.
Light, movement, and human connection begin to open a way forward.
Resilience and collective humanity carry the story toward becoming.
A pivotal musical shift becomes the visual turning point. The language moves from darkness, fragmentation, and uncertainty toward light, possibility, resilience, and triumph.
Hope emerges from the journey that came before it. The story carries the experience of loss forward as it moves toward renewal.
04 / Execution
The work combines editorial storytelling, motion design, compositing, typography, visual effects, stock-footage integration, color grading, and music-driven pacing. The project was developed in post-production, without a new live-action shoot.
Layered imagery, parallax, virtual camera movement, textures, light, and cinematic transitions create depth and connect the scenes. Color and visual treatment follow the emotional progression.
Typography appears selectively, supporting the emotional narrative rather than functioning as conventional captions. Editorial timing and transitions follow the music’s changes in energy and atmosphere.

05 / The result
The finished piece moves from innocence through disruption and questioning toward resilience, hope, and human connection. It carries a story through music and imagery, allowing the audience to feel the progression without dialogue explaining it.
This project demonstrates my approach as a creative solutionist: listen closely, understand the emotional challenge, identify the story, and connect the creative disciplines needed to bring it to life.
